European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA)
EPRA (European Platform of Regulatory Authorities) is set up in April 1995 as a platform for exchange of views about the practices and applications of regulatory authorities in the broadcasting field in Europe.
Presently 55 regulatory authorities are members to EPRA to which Radio and Television Supreme Council has become a member in 1996. European Commission, Council of Europe, European Audio-visual Observatory and OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media have permanent observer status in EPRA.
EPRA members are from European regulatory authorities which have at least one of the following functions:
-
- Licensing radio and/or television services,
- Making rules,
- Monitoring of programmes (TV and/or radio),
- Imposition of sanctions.
Secretariat of the EPRA is carried by the European Audiovisual Observatory based in Strasbourg.
EPRA meetings are hosted by member regulatory authorities twice a year. Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has hosted 20. EPRA meeting that has taken place in İstanbul between the dates 13-15 October 2004.
Different media topics are discussed in each EPRA meeting. In parallel to the developments taking place in Council of Europe and European Union, themes are selected among issues which maintain topicality in European countries like AVMS Directive, advertising and protection of minors.
During the meetings besides elaborating on legal frameworks/practices in broadcasting field, exchange of information in relation to current developments in European media landscape is also achieved.
